HGC becomes Hong Kong's largest-scale Wi-Fi service provider1
following expansion of "hgc on air" hotspot network to 16,000+

HGC's fixed-line and 3 Hong Kong's mobile
customers can now enjoy wider coverage

Hong Kong, 12 November 2014 - Hutchison Global Communications Limited (HGC), the fixed-line division of Hutchison Telecommunications Hong Kong Holdings Limited (HTHKH; stock code: 215), today announced that the population of "hgc on air" outdoor Wi-Fi hotspots has exceeded 16,000. This makes HGC Hong Kong's largest-scale Wi-Fi service provider1 and grants wider network coverage to HGC fixed-line and 3 Hong Kong mobile customers wanting fast and stable wireless Internet service.

By the end of 2013, HGC provided some 12,000 "hgc on air" hotspots - but that number increased 30% to more than 16,000 within just a year. And more than 5,000 "hgc on air EX" hotspots are now served by 1G optical-fibre backhaul, compared with a little more than 1,000 last year. A greater number of hotspots enhances overall wireless Internet speed and stability - to the benefit of fixed-line and mobile customers.

HTHKH Chief Operating Officer Jennifer Tan said: "As an integrated telecommunications operator, we constantly work on all technology fronts to strengthen our leading position in the market. We increased our Wi-Fi hotspot population within a very short period of time, allowing fixed-line and mobile customers to share the benefit of high-speed wireless Internet access. This, of course, is largely thanks to the dedication of our teams of experts."

Customers can use Wi-Fi enabled devices such as smartphones, tablets and notebooks at "hgc on air" hotspots in large shopping arcades, coffee shop chains, fast food outlets, popular restaurants, commercial buildings, large housing estates, institutes of tertiary education and car parks. For details, see www.threebb.com.hk/eng/hgconair_hotspot.html. Among other things, this allows Internet users to make instant updates on their social networks, upload and download files, listen to music or watch videos - all while out and about.

HGC has devoted itself to developing a superior residential broadband capability, which has seen Fibre-to-the-Home technology equipping customers with high-quality indoor broadband at speeds up to 1G. Recent work based on solid network infrastructure and comprehensive coverage strengths has also enabled extension of HGC's optical-fibre backhaul network to Wi-Fi hotspots in order to serve development of outdoor Wi-Fi service. This was rebranded "hgc on air" at the end of last year. HGC's expansion of outdoor Wi-Fi coverage also has the effect of relieving ever-increasing levels of traffic on the mobile network, thereby enhancing the overall experience for mobile telecommunications customers.
