Kwai Chung - boosting provision of world-class data centre solutions
to serve enterprises
Hong Kong, 17 June 2014 - HGC GlobalCentre Limited (HGCGC), a joint venture between Hutchison Telecommunications Hong Kong Holdings Limited (HTHKH, stock code: 215) and Cheung Kong (Holdings) Limited (stock code: 1), has opened a new data centre at Kwai Chung. The facility combines with an existing data centre in Wong Chuk Hang to strengthen HGCGC's world-class data centre services proposition to enterprises, which includes server colocation and disaster recovery solutions.
Covering a gross floor area of more than 110,000 square feet, the new data centre was designed according to TIA-942 tier-3 grade standards and has attained ISO 27001 certification for operational security. This highly-secure and reliable facility benefits from a 24/7 network operations centre and stringent building management system monitoring, and offers private rooms or individual cabinets to meet the differing needs of customer organisations.
HTHKH Chief Operating Officer Jennifer Tan said: "In this era of cloud and big data, the sharply increasing e-commerce and cloud computing needs of local and global corporations are boosting market demand for data centre services. Following inauguration of the Kwai Chung data centre, the total capacity of our facilities* has increased by 60% in terms of number of cabinets, while gross floor space expanded by 40%, greatly enhancing the competitiveness of our data centre business. This, coupled with our highly-efficient management, ensures that HGCGC will provide yet more corporate customers with data centre services that include server colocation, disaster recovery solutions, IT outsourcing and more - all while boosting our own business growth."
Distance between data centres reinforces disaster recovery efficacy
HGCGC is now one of very few operators owning tier-3 grade, or higher, data centres in Hong Kong Island and the New Territories. Data centres located in different districts are supported by different power companies to ensure diversity of power supply. In addition, HGCGC's two data centres - at Kwai Chung and Wong Chuk Hang - are approximately 20 kilometers apart, and can therefore serve as primary and back-up sites. This meets the standard disaster recovery distance requirement - and makes HGCGC the obvious choice for corporate customers.
One-stop data centre services come complete with high-speed 100G Ethernet connectivity
Both HGCGC's data centres link to a 100G Ethernet network, enabling customers to interconnect their networks with data centres at high speed. They also support various types of network connectivity such as Cat-6 UTP (unshielded twisted pair) and fibre-optic cabling, while dual lead-ins minimise connection failure. Co-operation with Hutchison Global Communications Limited, HTHKH's fixed-line business, positions HGCGC ideally to satisfy demand for one-stop local and international network and data centre services.
Business continuity centre ensures smooth operations for enterprises
Continuity is vitally important to enterprises, which is why a business continuity centre has been built into the Kwai Chung facility. Equipped with network and phone connectivity, this centre enables customers to resume operations in the event of disruption at their own premises.
HGCGC operates facilities at Kwai Chung and Wong Chuk Hang, while sister company, Hutchison GlobalCentre Limited, runs a data centre at Shatin. Operating together, the three facilities provide data centre services to a huge number of top-notch financial institutions, banks, investment banks, multinational corporations, content service providers and cloud service providers.
*Total capacity of facilities refers to the sum of capacities at HGCGC's data centres at Kwai Chung and Wong Chuk Hang, plus that of Hutchison GlobalCentre Limited at Shatin.
